Is Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba Better Than Prequel? : Review

Haseen Dillruba received mixed reviews upon its release in 2021, but its gripping story and stellar performances by Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey kept audiences on the edge of their seats. Now, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, the sequel to this movie, is written by Kanika Dhillon and directed by Jayprad Desai. It was released on Netflix on August 9, 2024. In this article, I will review Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba by sharing my opinions. First, I’ll give a brief overview of the story, followed by my thoughts on the movie and a final verdict.

Story of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba

The story of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba begins with Rani Kashyap (Taapsee Pannu) rushing to the police station, claiming her husband tried to kill her. The story then flashes back two months earlier. Rani is living alone in a PG and running a beauty parlor. Soon after, we see that her husband, Rishabh (Vikrant Massey), is still alive—a twist that concluded the first Haseen Dillruba movie. Rani and Rishabh have been secretly meeting since the incident from the first film, avoiding direct contact and only speaking over the phone to stay hidden from the police. According to police records, Rishabh is dead, and the couple doesn’t want to attract attention.

Meanwhile, Rishabh’s Montu Chacha (Mrityunjay), played by Jimmy Shergill, a DSP, takes over the case and interrogates Rani. To avoid suspicion, Rani and Rishabh devise a plan where Rani marries Abhimanyu, a compounder who loves her. But soon after the marriage, Abhimanyu learns that Rishabh is alive. He assures Rani and Rishabh that he will help them escape the police and elope to Thailand. Here’s where the real plot twist unfolds. To find out what happens next—whether Abhimanyu truly wants to help them or if he has his own plans—you’ll need to watch Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba on Netflix

Writing and Screenplay:

As I mentioned earlier, the movie’s story doesn’t pick up directly from where the first one left off. There are flashback sequences where Rani and Rishabh live under different identities, but the real story begins when DSP Mrityunjay, aka Montu Chacha, enters the scene. At this point, the investigation begins, which may provide some thrills, but the pace of the story feels slow at times. Some of the plot twists are predictable. While the climax is well-written, it could have been better, especially compared to the earlier part of the movie, which had a shocking twist. Although some reviewers have given it 2 to 2.5 stars, I believe it deserves at least 3 stars.

Direction :

Director Jayaprad Desai faced the challenge of surpassing the emotional connection the previous film established with its audience. While he aimed to deliver an even better experience, it seems he fell short. Some scenes felt predictable, and the climax lacked the special shocking twist that made the earlier film unforgettable. The director did his best to meet the audience’s expectations.

Performance :

Taapsee Pannu is the heart of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba. She delivers a stellar performance, once again proving her talent. Vikrant Massey’s character doesn’t have much scope in this movie, though his role remains important. As expected, he leaves a lasting impression on the audience. Jimmy Shergill, who plays the role of Mrityunjay (Montu), is a new addition to the movie and gives a strong performance. Sunny Kaushal, who plays Abhimanyu, delivers a performance that stands out as the most unpredictable character in the movie.

Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba: Final Verdict

If you’re a fan of suspense thrillers, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba will surely entertain you. However, if you’re expecting the same level of suspense and twists as Hasseen Dillruba (2021), you might be disappointed. While it’s a good suspense movie, it doesn’t quite live up to the expectations set by the first film.
