Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, brings a quirky blend of romance, fantasy, and time-loop chaos set in the vibrant lanes of Banaras. Produced by Maddock Films, this dramedy attempts to follow in the footsteps of hits like Stree, but with far less clarity and consistency. While the premise is intriguing and the visuals are lively, the storytelling struggles to stay on track.

The Plot: A Wedding Day That Never Ends
Bhool Chuk Maaf follows the story of Ranjan Tiwari (Rajkummar Rao), a young man from Banaras who dreams of securing a government job so he can marry his girlfriend, Titli Mishra (Wamiqa Gabbi). When Titli’s father gives him a strict two-month deadline to find stable employment, Ranjan is left with no choice but to rely on a shady broker, Bhagwan Das (played in a special appearance by Sanjay Mishra). As expected, things go south when the broker disappears with the money.
Just when things start falling into place again and the wedding is back on, Ranjan finds himself caught in a bizarre time loop. Every time he wakes up, it’s the day before his wedding all over again. Trapped in this loop with no clear escape, he seeks help and divine intervention while trying to understand the purpose behind his situation.
Performances That Shine
The biggest strength of Bhool Chuk Maaf is its lead pair. Rajkummar Rao once again proves his mettle by infusing energy and authenticity into his role. Wamiqa Gabbi delivers a confident and grounded performance, giving Titli both charm and grit. Their chemistry is endearing and helps maintain viewer interest even when the plot falters.
Supporting actors like Seema Pahwa (as Ranjan’s mother), Raghubir Yadav (as the laid-back father), and Ishtiyak Khan add flavour to the narrative with their comic timing and strong screen presence. However, despite a talented cast, the screenplay doesn’t give them enough depth to shine fully.
Banaras: A Vibrant Backdrop
The film’s setting in Banaras adds a visual richness that stands out. Cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee captures the ghats, narrow streets, and bustling markets with flair. The city feels alive and chaotic, perfectly complementing the madness of the story. However, despite this vibrancy, the narrative often feels repetitive due to the nature of the time loop.
Weak Writing and Genre Confusion
One of the major drawbacks of Bhool Chuk Maaf is its inconsistent tone. The movie tries to juggle too many genres — comedy, fantasy, romance, and spiritual drama — but doesn’t quite succeed in blending them smoothly. The script, written by director Karan Sharma, is packed with ideas but lacks focus. The time-loop concept, while promising, is not fully explored or explained, making it hard for audiences to connect emotionally.
The film oscillates awkwardly between light-hearted comedy and serious drama. Moments that should be funny or emotional often feel forced or incomplete. The time-loop device becomes more of a gimmick than a meaningful storytelling tool.

Despite having an original concept and a capable cast, Bhool Chuk Maaf falls short of becoming a memorable film. It doesn’t dig deep into its characters or the spiritual themes it hints at. Instead, it relies heavily on visual appeal and surface-level drama. The time-loop scenario repeats without offering enough variations or development, making the second half feel predictable and stretched.
