Su From So (2025) Review: A Hilarious Horror Ride Rooted in Village Life

In the world of Indian cinema, where big-budget movies with highly paid superstars rule the industry, a small-budget film from the Kannada film industry has become the talk of the town. Yes, I am talking about J.P. Thuminad’s directed Kannada horror comedy film ‘Su From So,’ also known as Sulochana from Someshwara. It broke all the box office speculation narratives that only big-budget movies can draw an audience to the theatre. With its unique blend of humour, supernatural elements, and heart-touching social commentary, it has won the audience’s appreciation.

Su From So, produced by Shashidhar Shetty Baroda, Ravi Rai Kalasa, and Raj B. Shetty under Lighter Buddha Films, has redefined success in Kannada cinema. With a brilliant cast, a compelling story, and a box office performance that challenges expectations, Su from So is a must-watch film that deserves success. That said, in this article, I write my review of what I think about this movie.

Su From So Story: A hilarious but heart-touching village tale

Su from So Kannada Movie review

The story of Su From So, set in a lush village in Dakshina Kannada. Ravi Anna (Shaneel Gautham) is the go-to guy of the village, and Ashoka (J.P. Thuminad) is a carefree young man who works under Ravi Anna. When Ashoka tries to give his phone number to his crush during a funeral, he sneaks into a ritual room to check his phone.

After that incident, some strange occurrences make the villagers believe that Ashok is possessed by a spirit. All the villagers try to find out whose spirit it is. They find out that the ghost is of a woman named Sulochana from Someshwara, hence the title Su From So. The first half of the film has chaotic misadventures that the villagers go through to get rid of this situation and save Ashoka from the ghost, which leads to hilarious events that will make the audience laugh out loud.

The second half of the film showcases the emotional story of Bhanu, the daughter of Sulochana, and her struggles against social standards. This shift from comedy to social drama is smooth, maintaining the entertainment values while giving a powerful message. The story captures the beauty of village life, a blend of comedy, horror, superstition, and community spirit, into a story that is relatable and rooted deeply in coastal culture.

Cast and Performances

The main reason for the success of Su from So is its talented cast, who delivered authentic, natural, and engaging performances. Shaneel Gautham as Ravin Anna, the village’s respected go-to fixer, whose commanding presence and endearing charm make him a standout. Debutant director J.P. Thuminad brings subtlety to Ashoka, balancing youthful enthusiasm with comedic style. Sandhya Arakere as Bhanu is the highlight of the second half, adding an emotional touch to the story. The supporting cast is also equally impressive.

Prakash Thuminad as Rickshaw Chandranna, Deepak Rai Panaje as Sarhishanna, and Mime Ramadas as Yadhu Anna, whose committee-forming speeches make you laugh. Raj B. Shetty’s special appearance as Karunakara Guruji adds more fun to the story, with his flawless comedy timing and spiritual satire drawing cheers in theatres. Pushparaj Bolar as Bhaava, and other characters like the reluctant priest and an old man suffering from cataracts, enhance the entertainment value of the film.

Technical Brilliance: Crafting the Experience

The film’s technical aspect raises its storytelling. Cinematography by S. Chandrasekaran captures the soothing landscape and vibrant rural life, framing emotions with skill. Sumedh K’s music and Sandeep Thulasidas’s background score enhance both comedic and emotional scenes. Editing by Nithin Shetty ensures that there aren’t any unnecessary scenes to keep the story engaging. The songs are seamlessly combined into the story, adding to the cultural flavour without breaking the flow.

Why Su From So Matters

Su From So is the perfect example of how simple, heartfelt storytelling can win over audiences. Its success didn’t rely on aggressive marketing or big promotional budgets—it was purely driven by how much people genuinely loved the film. When the content connects with viewers, word-of-mouth becomes the most powerful marketing tool. As Raj B. Shetty rightly said in a Kannada newspaper interview, “If the film is good, the Kannada audience will never ignore it.”

Conclusion

The Kannada film industry has finally received a much-needed comedy family entertainer after years. Honestly, I haven’t laughed this much in a theatre in a very long time. Sulochana From Someshwara is more than just a movie—it’s a cultural moment that has redefined what success looks like in Kannada cinema. Have you watched this masterpiece? What’s your take on it?
